Sonia Delaunay

Sonia Delaunay (1885 – 1979) is one of my favourite artists. She was born in Russia but spent most of her working life in Paris, Spain and Portugal where she developed her unique artistic style. She was so versatile - her work extending to painting, textile design, fashion design and she even worked on set designs and costumes for plays. She was also a key figure in the Parisian avant-garde, exploring new ideas about colour theory together with her husband Robert Delaunay.

She made clothes for private clients and friends, and in the early twenties created a whole line of fabric designs using geometrical shapes and bold colours. She also started her own label called Simultané.

If you haven’t already, you should get to the Tate Modern as quickly as possible to see the retrospective of her work on show, it is truly mind blowing! The exhibition shows a large collection of her works from early portraits, her textile designs and her paintings, to her beautiful watercolour fashion illustrations.
